A fundamental mistake that many active investors and traders make is focusing on profit and speed, aka, “How can I make a ton of money really fast?”
Of course, we are always hearing stories about a new trader or investor who turned a $50,000 account into $1 million in just a few months.
The validity of these stories notwithstanding, the problem with this is that the same trading approach that turns $50,000 into $1 million in a few months also turns $1 million into $0 – or less if trading on margin - just as quickly.
The goal of any serious trader or active investor should be consistent profitability over the long term, not to hit it rich quick. Which is why the focus shouldn’t be on speed and profit, but on risk, aka, “How much could I lose?”
