The Lund Loop Daily Update: Colorado Edition - Day 6 and Beyond
A review of today's action and a look at the profit opportunities for the next trading day.
Note: I’m on vacation so the Daily Update this week will be (mostly) dispatches from Colorado. We’ll return to our normal program starting August 18th.
Nobody wants to admit they’re a cliché, a grab bag of traits and behaviors assigned arbitrarily by the pop culture tastemakers of the moment. Yet, there is no denying that growing up I was a latchkey kid.
That meant I had plenty of hours during the day to watch daytime reruns, mostly half-hour sitcoms from the late ’60s and early ’70s. The Brady Bunch, Gilligan’s Island, Get Smart, I Dream of Jeannie, and Bewitched—I was a fan of them all. But the show I waited for every Monday through Friday was Hogan’s Heroes.
The show followed the exploits of a group of American, British, and French soldiers in a German prisoner-of-war camp during World War II. And here’s the kicker—it was a comedy.
I could only imagine how the pitch meeting went.
Producer: Okay, it’s World War II, you know, that thing where 4% of the planet’s population was killed and vast swaths of Europe and Asia were destroyed. Anyway, it’s about this wacky group of guys being held prisoner in a German POW camp and all the hijinks they get up to.
Studio Exec: Will there be Nazis?
Producer: Absolutely. In fact, the Gestapo will show up almost every week.
Studio Exec: I love it!
I’m not sure what drew young Brian to the show, but I suspect it was the back-and-forth between Col. Hogan, Col. Klink, and Sgt. Schultz, played respectively by Bob Crane, Werner Klemperer, and John Banner—the last two, ironically, Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany.
Because despite the dark setting, the show was actually funny. I particularly liked the bumbling antics of Schultz, whose catchphrase was, “I know nothing, NOTHING!”
As we wrap up our time here in Colorado, it’s occurred to me that I too know nothing. I know nothing of the world outside that which my senses revealed to me this week. And it’s been great.
Like most of us, I’ve made many attempts at dialing down the noise in my life—drawing up intricate plans to block, avoid, or filter the delivery systems: the news, the podcasts, the social media, and all the other usual suspects.
But here’s what I’ve found: the secret to eliminating noise isn’t about blocking it out—it’s about crowding it out. The trick is to have better things to do, more meaningful things to occupy your mind. Idle time may be the devil’s workshop, but it’s also distraction’s playground.
I’ll admit I’m more than a little concerned that once I’m home, this focus on what matters will drift back to an attraction to distraction—a gravitational pull toward the ridiculous and the trivial.
Only time will tell.
Anyway…
Yesterday was all about ziplining. It was the first time for all of us and it couldn’t have been more fun.
Today will be a lazy day. After a late checkout, we’ll make our way back to Denver, where we’ll fly home on Sunday.
I hope you enjoyed following along with our Colorado adventures as much as I enjoyed sharing them. Beginning Monday, the Daily Update will go back to its normal format as we continue our work on finding the best opportunities to profit in the market.
