It’s 9:37 pm on a Friday night and I’m writing this post in my car, parked somewhere in North Hollywood.

The circumstances that have led me to this godforsaken spot, at an equally obnoxious time, I’ll save for my podcast.

Suffice to say, I must be brief.

Vice - either acknowledged or unrealized - is a sign of abundance in one’s life.

Those consumed with avoiding rocket attacks in Kyiv, the morality police in Iran, or simply gathering the daily sustenance to live in Biafra, don’t have such luxury.

By that standard, my life must be overflowing with riches as I’ve somehow managed to acquire sub-vices.

My far too many hours committed to YouTube no longer wander along the algorithmic popcorn trails left for me, but instead are now laser-focused on only three categories; restoration porn, winter hot tent camping, and music reaction videos.

The last of those genres is by far my favorite, consisting of - as the name implies - videos in which, we the viewer, get to see the reaction of someone as they listen to a song for the very first time.

It’s hard to explain the joy I get from watching people of all ages, races, and cultural backgrounds experience the awesomeness of Rush, Black Sabbath, or even better, seeing the look on their faces at the exact moment they realize that Charlie Pride is not a white guy from South Texas and that Humble Pie’s Steve Marriott is a white guy from East London.

There’s a universality to these reactions. A consensus that leaves no ambiguity.

The reaction to Friday’s job numbers was equally as unambiguous, though absent any joy.

Being reactive gets a bad rap.

It’s much cooler to anticipate.

To announce to the world - after the fact of course - that you knew the move was coming and were already positioned massively long, or short, whatever best fits the narrative and gets more people to sign up for your super awesome money coining day trading service.

Me, I prefer to wait. To see how the market reacts after the initial move.

But then again, it’s now 10:23 pm on a Friday night and I’m sitting in my car somewhere in North Hollywood.

And I’ve got a long drive home.
